Dr. Suborna Barua is a full Professor of Finance at the Department of International Business, 91精品. He obtained a PhD in climate finance from Federation University Australia and a BBA and MBA degree in finance from the 91精品, Bangladesh. Before joining the Department, Prof. Barua taught full-time at Jagannath University and United International University, as a Sessional Lecturer at Federation University Australia, and worked as a Research Associate at the Institute of Inclusive Finance and Development (InM) - funded by DFID-UK. Alongside full-time teaching, he taught at Monash University and Federation University in Australia as a Sessional Lecturer from 2016 to 2019 and served as a Research Fellow (part-time) at the Bangladesh Institute of Capital Market, Ministry of Finance, Government of Bangladesh, from 2021 to 2023. As a climate finance and economics expert, he serves on different government committees, primarily related to climate finance. Prof. Barua is a sitting member of the Technical Committee for Climate Finance Proposal Evaluation at the Ministry of Finance, Government of Bangladesh.

Prof. Barua is a professional trainer on climate finance, sustainable finance and investment, financial technology, financial data analytics, and financial markets. Furthermore, he has served in financial and management advisory and consulting roles at more than ten financial institutions operating in Bangladesh's money and capital markets. He has led and contributed to over 20 international and domestic public and private sector research and policy projects for the Government of Bangladesh, GIZ, BRAC-C3R, IWM, WFP, Oxfam Bangladesh, the World Bank, ADB, UNDP, Plan International, FCDO-UK (former DFID-UK), and the University of Oxford, covering topics in climate finance, impact investment, ESG, SME and microenterprise finance, energy transition, and environmental quality. He served as a Climate Finance Consultant for GIZ Bangladesh and supported the Economic Relations Division to establish the International Climate Finance Cell of the country.

Prof. Barua regularly delivers invited talks locally and internationally, with his previous deliveries including at the Ministry of Finance - GoB, Bangladesh Bank, Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management, the Smith School of Enterprise and Development, the University of Oxford, and the SEEFAR (Shift for Ecology, Economics, Finance and Accounting Research) center at the Kedge Business School on climate and sustainable finance. He has attended and presented at over twenty international and national conferences relevant to his work. He contributed to the negotiations in COP29 as a Bangladesh government delegate at Baku in 2024.

Prof. Barua鈥檚 portfolio includes a book titled Principles of Green Banking: Managing Environmental Risk and Sustainability, published by De Gruyter (2020) - a leading resource globally on sustainable banking. He has also authored several book chapters and over forty articles in highly-ranked and high-impact factor journals covering topics connecting climate change, energy, sustainability, circular economy, and SME and microenterprise finance. He is an Academic Editor for PLOS Climate and an Associate Editor for SN Business & Economics (Springer Nature). He is a former managing editor for the Journal of Financial Markets and Governance. His current research interests include finance, environment, sustainable development, and machine learning and artificial intelligence applications in sustainability.
